Games designer is pretty broad, at some point you'll need to narrow it down. Do you want to focus on low level coding, AI coding, 3d/gui design/coding, etc.
Do you know any programming languages? Like Franny said start learning C++ (now), uni's tend use Java as their programming language example.
And as a few have mentioned starting off at a games studio's QA dept. is a good way to get your foot in the door. Also if you can manage to get yourself a work placement then that helps (even if it's for a short period of time and possibly be willing to offer to do it without pay - some studio's may not have the budget for a work placement).
