Would I be right in saying that this is a highly competitive job market?
Good luck but look for as much experience as possible now. Even if it is making cups of tea for the likes of Miles, Wolfman, etc...

| It is and there are loads of people doing some sort of Games design. You have to be the best to get in the industry. I know a few people doing Games Tech at Uni and seem some of the things they have done and its really good but even they have struggled finding jobs. You need to do a lot of extra stuff too to gain practice. This is just IMO though and I could be wrong.

These are the latest job vacancies available at SI here.
If you look at those it gives a rough idea of what you need to know.
Like Ackter said, getting a testing job is a good way to get your foot in the door |

I'm a belgian university student, and I 'study' art history. it's a dead end jobwise, but a sea of women nevertheless.

Having a Games Design degree probably wouldn't hurt but I wouldn't consider it essential. A Game Director told me recently that last week was the first time he'd ever hired a design graduate.
QA (testing) can be a good way to get in. A lot of people in the industry started by doing their time in QA, it gets your foot in the door. I'd say there are many transferrable skills between QA and Design.
If you want to apply for a design role straight away then familiarity with commonly used software might be a help. Experience with some sort of source control and/or popular middleware (UnrealEd etc) might give you a headstart, depending on the employer.
Building up a portfolio of quality work is something else you'd probably need. Mods, maps, anything third party that you've created can demonstrate your abilities to prospective employers.
