New York, USA (October 1, 2007) – Leading grand strategy publisher Paradox Interactive announced today their next title in development. Their critically acclaimed development team, behind successful franchises like Europa Universalis and Hearts of Iron, is currently busy working on Europa Universalis: Rome.
“A truly challenging strategy game portraying the Roman Era has yet to be released and we believe strategy gamers have been kept waiting for long enough, said Fredrik Wester, Executive Vice President for Paradox Interactive. “Our successful development team has the knowledge, skills and genre expertise to create a strong strategy game to accurately represent the Roman Era and we are more than excited to introduce this game to the strategy gaming community. “
Europa Universalis: Rome will cover the time period from the first Punic War to the start of the true Empire. Players will have thousand of gameplay choices ranging from country, culture, provincial and character options to name but a few, making each and every game infinitely customizable and truly unique.
“Europa Universalis: Rome combines the best of the Empire Building, Conquest and Warfare genres, wrapped into a title that contains all main characteristics of a typical Paradox Interactive game”, said Johan Andersson, Director of Development. “This project has the potential to become the most talked about grand strategy game to date”
Europa Universalis: Rome is schedule for a worldwide release during Q2, 2008.
If previous Paradox games are anything to go by, this will be how the campaign in Rome: Total War should have been - but you won't get the 3d battles.
It's a slow day today but this might be of interest to at least one other person... maybe.
I was hoping this new announcement would be Crusader Kings 2 - but, to be fair, this is the next best thing for me, and a decent strategy game set in the classical period sounds good to me.
O God yes. I always got bored with the 3D battles in Total War anyway and the campaign map was never deep enough to carry it. Hopefully it deals with the whole ambivalent General/Senate relationship aspect.
EU2 was a classic - probably their best all-round game. I haven't tried EUIII yet, and heard a few people complain about it - Gerd Muller from OTF was one.
The depth of the strategy should outstrip that in R:TW by some distance. Paradox have a good rep for designing games around decent research so I expect this to be the same.
However, this won't be simply a war campaign - there'll be a few layers of strategy I would have thought.
Less than a year to wait too - although Paradox do also have a rep for being late with projects.
Hearts of Iron 2 and Europa Universalis II are probably their best received and most popular games. So it depends whether you like modern history or pre-modern. EU runs from 1453-1800s.
Crusader Kings is firmly in the 'cult' category (medieval dynasties).
Victoria is another 'cult' game (19th century imperialism).
Diplomacy is a version of the board game and is, apparently, rubbish.
