If aliens are actually clever life forms, they're probably just observing Earth and sitting back, waiting for us to kill ourselves off to save the hassle of an invasion.

Almost certainly not. Humans can catch diseases from some animals, but when was the last time you heard of anyone dieing from Dutch Elm disease, or tobacco mosaic virus? And we're more closely related to plants than an alien would be to any Earth species.
