Didn't Arsenal effectively hand over Van Bronckhorst to stop Barcelona reporting them to FIFA/UEFA?
there was a bit of dispute about how we approached Cesc iirc. Barca basically claimed we poached him. So yeah we gave them Gio to stop them going to UEFA/FIFA.

not saying we did poach him might i add, i think we exploited loopholes and the like. But to stop Barca dragging the whole thing out by reporting us it was jsut easier to give them Gio and keep them quiet.

I think that's quite an important aspect, that a new contract has been offered. If the player rejects it then it can go to tribunal. A club can't decide it doesn't want to renew someone's contract and then demand money if a rival picks them up.
