Inane question regarding text messaging- soothe my fevered brow.
Has any provider ever tried to charge per character, as opposed to a flat charge per message?
I was thinking a derisory fee per character, if balanced with the average length of text message, and the average number sent, could actually create a greater profit yet still appear to the consumer a better deal.
Popped into my head when I was reading about telegrams charging by the word. Obviously a text message isn't any more demanding to send if it has a few more characters, but I'm surprised no company ever tried it.
Feel free to tell me it's an idiotic question, as long as you explain why.

they still rape users on sms given the low amount of resources they use as opposed to calls. in that they price ratio of call:sms is nowhere near the actual network usage of call:sms
