WHS...apprenticeship is the way forward...except time scales vary from course to course. Some take 2 years to get your basic Plumbing certificate City & Guilds...which is basically just basic plumbing skills and theory stuff which allows you to be a "plumbers mate" *wink* *wink* apparently anyway.
You would neeed to give yourself roughly 3-6 years to do it properly...
Unless you don't want to qualifications and stuff and just want to be a man and his van...which is fine...but these days especially with the the influx of plumbers from abroad and then you have the average handy-man there's no lack of competition out there and the way things are going it's won't be too long till it gets to the point where you need to have a qualification to even touch a piece of pipe...
Contact CITB...Learn-Direct...and IPHE they can all point you in the right direction. Check your local college in your area...they should be running a scheme. There are waiting lists though some are up to 1 year. So if you apply now you could find that there wouldn't be a place till 2009 at the earliest but most of these donuts who sign up...drop out after a month after they realise that plumbing ain't about changing and fixing leaking taps...thus alot of places get wasted by idiots who are have bought into the idea of making money fast but realise that it takes years and hard graft.
Anyways that's all I can advice you as there isn't a correct or wrong way to become a plumber...and you'll be looking at 3-6 years minimum to invest of your time and effort.
