Good idea. Inheritance tax kicks in at quarter million or something like that.
You can give a one off untaxable gift of something like 40grand per year.
Better to get money in gifts over the years.

| No, but it is pretty much common place, isn't it?
Families pass down homes, money, titles, possessions from one generation to another for continuity and keeping the family "alive".
When it doesn't happen it is very much against the norm.
Just because there is a lot of money involved doesn't suddenly make her a money grabber.

| I was referring to PETs (Potentially Exempt Transfers) where you can gift cash/assets to another person, and if you live for 7 years after the gift said person wont pay any IHT. Not sure where you got your one off £40k tax free gift from? Havent heard that before.

yes it is in a majority of cases "the norm"
its the attitude of assuming she'll get it one day & no the amount isn't important, its her attitude at being told that she's not going to be richer

| But we've already agreed that the money isn't the issue.
The loss of the family home, possessions and a lifetime's worth of history and memories are what she is complaining/ unhappy about.
The size of the amount is what is being focussed on by the press as it is a considerable sum.

she'll always (baring senility) have the memory's
home/possessions are what i'm talking about
sod the amount its worth-it could be £1.50
its her attitude that she has had something taken from her when she's never owned it,it was never said to her she would own it & now its been shown she doesn't own it she has spit her dummy posed for photo's

You're just not getting the difference between the material and emotional attachment here are you?
As has been pointed out earlier in the thread being cut out/ downgraded in a will is often followed with the recipient wondering about the reasons why.
Couple it in with the sale of her childhood home, memories and family heritage (I feel I'm repeating myself somewhat here...) and you can see why this is an emotional story.

| i can see where you're going, the woman just comes across as feeling she's earned it by mentioning the 40 years of weekends & looking after her mother & you don't (or shouldn't) earn inheritance, to me a gift (& probably why i'm likely to get as much from my nan as as this woman got from her parents) as i'm not going to lower myself & pretend to like someone to get something in return
so she has an emotional attachment to the property? (inc. tables she had her 1st dinner at etc.)
well to be quite blunt- tough ****, she has nothing physically to remember them/her days there by because she didn't sit down with them and ask for something just assuming all of it would one day be hers.
she assumed wrong

It's good to see the general level of empathy in OTF remains consistent anyway.
