How does a magazine giving a game 96% mean that said game justifies the hype?

Last time i read a magazine it was impossible for a game to get below 70% unless it was absolutely shockingly dire. Some publishers were also known to reward magazines who gave favourable reviews to games.

Has that all stopped now?

I can gaurantee you it has.

It was certainly always the best PC magazine and generally the most reliable. But that doesnt mean it was always completely honest and totally impartial.

We all get offered the same, it's down to the individual reviewers to turn them down.

Fwiw, the game is good, but 96% suggests one of the best games of all time, and for me that's generous. I've only played two levels, but in my opinion a game lives or dies by it's replayability. Not sure how often I would play this after working my way through it. The fact it looks gorgeous, sounds great, etc..... doesn't do much for me because nowadays, I've kinda come to expect that from the big budget games, Oblivion set this benchmark. Storyline is quite engaging, weapons are a unique touch, and it's got the atmosphere nailed down.

looking at the scores they've given for games over the years their certainly one of the most harshest of raters.
while other magazines have given respectable scores theyv'e given low scores.

if they gave respectable scores for those that give them a little pay off i'm sure that the sims would be getting better scores. something like 5% for one of the sims add ons the other month

i think half life 2 got 97% when that came out. i very rarely play any game again once i've finished it.
the only game i have done is mafia. i've played that through about 4 times now.

didn't think much of Stranglehold myself when I heard it was a John Woo production, just thought it would be a bit crappy - but I pre-ordered it on the basis of playing the demo through a few times :cool: although I did have two mates telling me it was amazing before they had even seen it

got Bioshock pre-ordered as well :cool:
