Huh? Does that mean Tony is going to be knighted to at some stage...he won 3 elections. </BLOCKQUOTE>
I would assume so. Thatcher got the female equivalent and shes the devil.

| "Devil" being an odd euphemism for "greatest Prime Minister since Clement Atlee"?

You know what would be funny...right now most of the public has some dislike for Tony...
But in years to come...I bet you there will be an out-cry from people saying he was great PM and all the rest of it...
Time seems to make people have not only selective memories but also allows for forgiveness/forgotteness to happen. |

Dislike Maggie for any number of reasons but you have to applaud her (and her government) for the economy that we currently live in (and which the Labour party is happy to benefit from).

Plus if you actually look at what Brown announced, 500 of those troops are already home, and the other 500 haven't even gone to Iraq yet.
Add to that the fact that Brown promised to make announcements to Parliament, and you see what a lie his "moral compass" is.
| Your latter point is the clincher. Our fighting men and women becoming pawns in a political game is nothing new, but for Brown to promise an announcement to the Commons and then to pull this PR stunt is ridiculous. This on the back of Darling's "heartfelt" denunciation of the Tories new tax plans for foreign domiciles being another case of a promise that can't be kept.
Plus Labour's defense seems to be that the business of Government cannot wait while the Tories have their conference. This announcement could've easily waited until Parliament reconvenes, and the business of Government seemed to manage fine on hold for a week while Labour had their get-together.

the EU treaty thing, i personally believe we shouldn't have a referendum on, for the simple reason theres too many people in this country that vote on what the red top papers tell them to. when brown says "i will do what is best for the country" then we should leave decisions up to the best advisor's, people who know what their doing. i would rather they decided than a guy who just wants a crown on his pint glass..
| You don't think the people who voted for Labour, who promised a referendum, deserve their representatives to do what is asked of them? Peope who read the Sun don't have any democratic rights? This isn't a dictatorship, where one man gets to decide what happens, regardless of what the people want. Quote: |
i did bring that up for a reason, as another thing that annoyed me, was DC jumping on the referendum bandwagon and doing an article for the sun. that i thought was a guy who is in a very desperate situation
| The Conservative Party has always wanted a referendum on Europe, and Cameron has been writing a column for The Sun pretty much since he took over as leader. Like it or not, the Sun has a lot of readers, many of whom aren't particularly politically engaged. At a time when people are feeling more and more disinclined to involve themseles in politics, it's surely a good thing that he should actually try to reach some voters.

Time seems to make people have not only selective memories but also allows for forgiveness/forgotteness to happen. | Remove Iraq and he is one of the best post-war prime ministers imo. As for Thatcher, of course the economical liberalisation was required to allow us to enjoy the wealth we have as a nation today, but there were ways of doing it without destroying entire communities and The North. Plus, its always nice to have someone to hate...
