I don't think it is.
I've read it as they had another 1,700 tracks that they could've charged her with but chose only these 24.
My position on this is that in the greater scheme of things, she is a drop in the ocean and are using her pour encourager les autres.
This benefits no one as most people are just going to go "so what" and carry on as before. It also more importantly delays the Music Industry from getting their house in order in regards to piracy and measures to combat it.

That is the risk that a person takes when they download. Sure, the fine is steep, but that's the consequence.
Or she should learn to cover her tracks more carefully - Kazaa? Meh.

Piracy's great. Making music live again. Good for everyone except the record industry, and as they spent decades ripping everyone off it's time they did a disappearing act. Frankly can't believe the neck of 'em.

lets not forget that the riaa has the habit of targeting people with legal action then offering to settle out of court, a practice that could be compared to blackmail especially when you consider that several of those treated in such a manner have been able to prove that they couldn't have downloaded the songs in question
or the fact that there are numerous bands and (smaller) record labels who approve of file sharing as a way of spreading the word and increasing the people who listen to their music. not good news for the major labels who've been able to dominate the radio for decades
so not really a choice between 'cancer and aids" then, more a choice between a huge proportion of the developed world's population, who download music, and some ***** at a record label

They tend to charge the people who upload/share more than just the downloaders. Obviously you cant have one without the other, but ive never seen a case of someone charged for purely downloading stuff.

your not locked into their system though? you can use many legal online music stores which sells music in mp3 format which is fully compatible with the ipod.

She shared 24 tracks? So did the other 1,700 people that contributed to the sharing.

Like hell it is. It's copyright infringement, a whole different matter.
