Default Bit of a router problem.

Nt sure to ask this in the wireless thread or not. Shout at me if so.

Been running a router for ages now with no probs apart from the odd drop out, solved by a restart. In the past 24 hours though, my flatmate has has problems with his PC dropping out. Odd thing is that during all this, I'm on my laptop postign on here fine, and also have the 360 running and not been signed out of xBox live at all.

Now, most of you are fully aware of my limited (ie non-existent) IT knowledge. I don't know where to start to find out what's going on. He's done a spyware/adware scan and deleted everything. Still the same problem. I've unplugged the router, left it, and then restarted. Same result.

Any ideas?

Given your history, I wouldnt touch anything!

Could be a number of things, site of pc for wifi signal, if its a usb wifi adaptor then powersave could be dropping power to the usb ports.
when you say deleted everything referring to spyware/adware then you mean it found issues? If so Id look at that those malware items do for a start.

It didn't seem anything serious on the spyware, just some cookies.

It's a cabled link from the router through to his room, so not wifi. Not sure what you mean by powersave etc :o

PC's have the ability to send network ports (and usb ports) into powersave which obiovuly has a bit of a detrimental effect.

If he's getting a loss of connection every x minutes on a cabled connection then he's either getting an ip conflict or theres a hardware issue.

And what would cause an ip conflict? Could the fact I'm online, on xbox live, then he tries to connect have an effect? I'm just guessing here ofc.

Gonna get him to run hijack this as well, just in case.

You need unique ip addresses for each machine/device.

Turn power saving off in device manager for the device (network nic)

Ignore me, being rubbish. Done that.

I have a feeling that we have the same IP address though. I haven't set anythng new up anyway. Plugged the 360 into the route and it just connected, did the same for the flatmate's PC and Windows just picked up the connection.

Although if it were an IP issue, who have I been able to do the 360 an here at the same time, and he's been online for the past two months with no issues?
