That is astonishingly stupid

Even if you're assuming that he wouldn't recognise that it's English without being able to speak it (he would).

English-looking reporter comes up to you in an English speaking country and asks you a question. Dida doesn't need frightening powers of deduction to figure out that the question's probably in English.
