I was speaking of relatively non-corrupt and democratic states, tbh.

The US are different that way. Rather fanatical, even. Must have something to do with the fact that lots of immigrants/founders were people who fled/were kicked out of Europe because of religious grounds, I suppose.

Another angle: many claim to be religious, because it's the thing to be. If many really are religious, seems doubtful. They certainly don't live the alledged religious values.
