). And I skim the headlines of Bild and Abendzeitung in the kiosks for laughs and to see where certain people get their 'info'.

I think it's part of the problem. When I'm unfamiliar with a language I just pick out the words I understand and then try and guess the rest of the sentence. Kind of what it looks like Abe is doing. Plus his replies look like he's using a translator for a lot of the words.
