Amount of training is off putting aswell. 3-4 years training in the astronaut core. Then if you're lucky to be selected a 4 year training period for the mission
| Didn't realise there was another 4 year training period. Easier to pay the Russians to send you in that case. </BLOCKQUOTE>
It is for a shuttle mission, but thats due to the amount of training they have to do for 3 or 4 EVA's they do while up there. For every hour they spend on an EVA, they do 6 on earth training and practising.

Have you been considering this or just read it up?
Big reason I did engineering was to keep my options open for astronaut training (same reason I haven't done laser eye surgery). UK doesn't send astronauts up though so may have to get US citizenship one day.

Join the RAF, get pilot trained, bugger off to the US. That's how all the other Brits did it.

Just reading up on it (my whole day is spent either here or at the nasa forums )

| Actually all the Brits that have flown with NASA had PhDs in engineering or science.

This was where I had a job offer for antenna research: http://www.esa.int/esaCP/SEMOMQ374OD_index_0.html
But would've delayed my PhD for a year, and would have had to live with the bastard Dutch (actually they're alright).

If you're thinking of joining, probably can get more info http://uplink.space.com/ubbthreads.php?Cat=&C=1
Quite a few of the posters on that work for Nasa (one in mission control and one for the ISS). Will be better equit to help you out

Which Brits went as pilots? I don't know any. Pretty sure there were only four.
