"1. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in engineering, biological science, physical science, or mathematics. Quality of academic preparation is important. Degree must be followed by at least 3 years of related, progressively responsible, professional experience. An advanced degree is desirable and may be substituted for experience as follows: master’s degree = 1 year of experience, doctoral degree = 3 years of experience. Teaching experience, including experience at the K - 12 levels, is considered to be qualifying experience for the Astronaut Candidate position; therefore, educators are encouraged to apply. "

it occurs to me that the last types you want to select are the current astronaut types - go getter ex pilots with rather large and bruisable egos.
| Actually most astronauts nowadays, apart from the pilots, are engineers, scientists or doctors.
Was actually considering signing up for this with my fiancee but no guarantees we'd be together (maybe a good thing?) and it doesn't help your chances of getting on the actual Mars mission.

Er, I don't think they're looking for the type of people who'll only do it if they can go with their girlfriend. They're poofs.

Actually the guy I know from ESA said they were recruiting couples in med/bioeng/electronics as candidates for the study but were doubtful they could find qualified applicants. Seriously being considered for the actualy mission though. You're split into groups of three for this though which is a bit of a bummer for the extra person.

Are they ****ing mad? Last thing you want is relationships up there.

Surely for this test to actually mean anything they have to use people similar to those who would go to Mars. Its pointless getting results from a nice couple or whoever, as these people would never go to Mars thus the results would be innaccurate
Endemol will televise it anyway

Amount of training is off putting aswell. 3-4 years training in the astronaut core. Then if you're lucky to be selected a 4 year training period for the mission

They're probably contemplating it then. iirc NASA have already sent couples to space. Could make sense for a 500 day mission, unless they're shagging 24/7 of course.

| Didn't realise there was another 4 year training period. Easier to pay the Russians to send you in that case.
