What if you were given only a 50/50 chance of returning, but half a million quid were put by for whoever you chose if you didn't get back?

| I wouldn't do the actual going to Mars part but i'd be happy to sit in a box in Russia for 17 months - well probably not 17 as i have an attention span of a 3 year old and would probably begin to naw my arm off after about an hour.

If im going to have to sit in a small space for 17 months, id rather it be going to Mars than just in a room somewhere.
But as much as i would love to go into space for something like that, id be too scared |

aren't the Ruskies building a moon station to use as a base for a manned trip to Mars? even though it's only about 0.00001% of the way there?
sounds stupid... a bit like preparing for a climb up Everest by putting your shoes on.

it occurs to me that the last types you want to select are the current astronaut types - go getter ex pilots with rather large and bruisable egos.
| Actually most astronauts nowadays, apart from the pilots, are engineers, scientists or doctors.
Was actually considering signing up for this with my fiancee but no guarantees we'd be together (maybe a good thing?) and it doesn't help your chances of getting on the actual Mars mission.

| Well more to do with the relative cost of launching from the moon as opposed to Earth, but wp anyway
