My mate is a Bricky in Central Scotland, He is self employed, but has a contract to a large buildin firm, so they always employ him for there work.
Its hard work, you usually have to work around contracts, meaning you can`t decide to take a holiday mid-contract, but you do get a lot of time off in winter and loads of days rained off.
For pay, it depends how much you want to earn and work for. My mate clears £24000 a year, but is off for about 2-3 months a year on holiday/rained off days. I think its a 3 year apprenticeship that he did.
The other side of it, is there are loads of jobs for cash available on the side for mates etc, you can near double your wage if you are willing to work all the hours. Your daily hours are fairly routine as well, if you contract yourself out to a firm.
