I agree with Jon that most people are finding no degradation of performance, myself included, in CS2. I've read all about the work arounds (ie. disabling font preview, and closing various palettes) as well as the issues with various graphics card and/or their drivers.

But the real point is that, you cannot deny that this release has resulted in an unusually high amount of negative feedback, almost entirely regarding performance drop-off. There are inherent problems with any software, that doesn't work within it's hardware recommendations, requires work-arounds, or is inconsistent under similar enviroments. I really don't think this version was properly beta tested or that it was rushed to market to meet the 18-month cycle. Seems that the last stable version was PS7.

Having said that, I haven't had a problem with CS2. So go figure. \:]

the scratch disc are set up same as they where in our versions of photoshop cs and photoshop 7 and the memory was set up as default (i thinkits 50% (same as the old versions)) the olny thing i change is the scratch discs as always.

i am starting to think this is a trial to full problem.....i have contacted adobe and tehy are sending a disc to us to test.

i ahve gone through the settings with support, they did state that they have had a few problems like this.

I'll agree with that. It seems some things were only done half-way, but I haven't experienced any performance issues once I turned the font preview off. (And that was just because I usually keep most of my fonts activated - bad practice, I know.)

However, I have been hanging around Adobe's User-to-user forums for a while now, and when CS came out, IIRC, there were MANY more problems and people posting about issues they had with CS than with CS2. I don't remember the how the forums were with 7, but 7 has to be my favorite release stability-wise. It was always rock solid, just like you said. (Although the brushes palette seemed to bog my PII-400 down quite a bit back then.)

dzero2 : You still haven't answered my questions. The articles I posted go through how different CS2 is from previous versions, so saying that everything "is set the same as before" really doesn't help us troubleshoot anything.

please dont get me wrong, i havent got a problem with photoshop in the form as a piece of software..... i couldn't earn a living with out it and its fellow cs family, and teh features on cs2 are what has been needed since the release of v7.0

i just think that if if a company like ours upgrades it wants a fluid transition from one to another..... and we didnt get that.

Jon, using a font manager will help you tremendously. The font preview was requested by a lot of users, but its performance is not transparent if you've got a lot of fonts installed.

Using big tiles might help Dzero 5CS behaviour will more closely math the one of CS (if you did not use the adjusted refresh plug-in)

Also, do not allocate too much memory if you are not using a 64bit OS.

The videocard problem is an issue of improper support of a peculiar API by nVidia on its Geforce 4400 and 4600 (at least, most people having problems use those videocards) Some had problems with quadro videocards and even ATI ones.

I have no problem on my GeForce 5200. Updating the drivers, or lowering the hardware acceleration helps.

People having a problem are a minority. But of course a vocal one.

Thanks for the comments about improper beta testing You do not even imagine the amount of time that can be dedicated doing so, and the rage you're into when you notice that some bugs have slipped through.

One cannot have every videocard on the market, with every combinaison of drivers...

BTW, people complaint at each new version of Photoshop. There is always some change that annoys the reluctants to evolution, some API that causes a problem where it was tested ok on a system that was almost the same... But the engineers do care for their program and try to fix most issues. The problem is that they need to be able to reproduce the problem to find its cause.

Pierre, I use a font manager, I'm just in the very bad habit of keeping all my fonts activated at once, even if I'm not using them. I seem to activate them when I need it, and then just don't get around to deactivating them.

dzero2, I don't think those are the cache and memory setting defaults for CS2 anymore. IIRC, (and I'm not at my computer) cache levels are defaulted at 6, and memory percentage is 55%. But that shouldn't make too much of a difference for you.

Try setting your primary scratch disk to be drive D, and go through the articles I linked to. (Have you upgraded your video drivers yet?)

You do mention that you are running this on machines with more than 2 gig of RAM. Have you tried the /3GB switch that will let CS2 access more than the standard 2 gig? That may help out matters.
Jonbalza, if you read the newsgroup articles in Adobe's newsgroup, then you would understand that this is a driver issue, caused by a new API that Adobe uses in CS2. Adobe hasn't come up with a solution (or workaround) yet, so I don't think any of us is going to solve it if you ask my honest opinion. Either Adobe will find a solution or the solution has to come from the video card manufacturers by releasing updated drivers.
