Really thought I would hate the Potter books until I actually took time to read them and couldn't put them down. Goes for other stuff too of course.

| The HP books are easy reading fodder for the masses.
The LOTR are the film equivalent.
I'm not saying that they're not bad at what they do just they're not going to be appearing on any lists in the future as to books/ films that changed the way we look at that genre.

There's plenty of easy-reading fodder out there... so clearly there's something special about the Harry Potter books.
There are plenty of non-literary masterpieces which have changed their genre too.

Consider the growth in the "Magic genre" both in adult and childrens book it is safe to say that the books will be hugely influential.
Having recently read the Dark Tower series by Stephen King he actually has a reference to Harry Potter in the books.
Its the same for the Da Vinci code its not War and Peace by any stretch of the imagination, however its a exciting thought-provoking story that has inspired eleventy-billion similar novels.

| I'm not doubting that there is something special about HP, but I am doubting their classification as a "cultural landmark".
They haven't defined a genre or started a new one.
You could, if you wanted to go into w@nky sociopolitical thinking, that the reason for their adult success is based solely on the current sh1ttiness of the society we live in and the escape they offered.
But I won't so let's leave that there!! |

| Magic books have been written since year dot.
Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland even LOTR are decades old.
And I'm sorry to say, but the mentioning of the Da Vinci code in your post negates all other statements.
That book is a pile of half truths and lies that has hoodwinked a huge amount of people.
If anything it is one of the most damaging books ever written.

| It really isn't. It's clumsily written, chock full of shoehorned-in cliffhangers, and only provokes thought from people who were until then oblivious to an entire field of scholarly investigation.
