Not really.
A generation has not passed since the Harry Potter books were written or the LOTR film made....

And in context of their content/ style/ depth, they are never going to be classed as master pieces of their genre.
The LOTR films are a combo of adequate storyline and CGI. The Harry Potter books are Wizards and magic.

Not exactly Gone with the Wind and Catch 22 are they?

Four Weddings and a Funeral a cultural landmark?
I'm not saying it's a credible piece of film, but it was the highest grossing British film ever, and is directly responsible for a lot of similar films.

Well since LOTR influenced the likes of Harry Potter I would say it's influential.

Why do the HP films need to be the equivalent of Catch 22? Why does it have to be a literary masterpiece?

It is and will be hugely influential... and I have neither read nor watch the books/films (I'm sooo proud!).

I've never seen an episode of any CSI either, if that helps.

I meant HP books.

The LOTR books are unquestionably influential. Don't know about the films though.

I've managed to avoid Harry Potter rather well. I read the first book when it came out and even at that age found it cringeworthy. Since then I've shunned the whole money-spinning affair.
