Didn't Labour just have their debts essentially cleared by some of the unions?

And anyway, when they've got John "we'll set aboot ye" Smeaton on their side Labour can't lose.

The chance of a snap election is all that's keeping some unions from openly denouncing Brown over certain things. Even Tony Benn demanded a European referendum today. Labour grassroots are more tepid on Brown than is immediately evident. Plus the Thatcher photo has them spitting.

I don't think they're spitting, are they? I think they'll see it for what it is, Gord sticking two fingers up at Cameron.

That said, the Labour people I know aren't exactly your typical labour activists.

No chance. The count would roll into the early hours of Sunday morning and there'd be a lot of Presbyterians who wouldn't turn out.

has to be held on a Thursday, certainly never a weekend. Gives everyone a chance to spin the result for the Sunday newspapers.

voting day should basically be a half holiday at least, get people at least discussing why they've got a free day off work :/

Brown should do it, just for the majority to give him that 'elected authority' blah blah. If he waits too long it'll give the tories to re-invent themselves yet again to go anti brown.
