What the hell is the deal with currency out there?!

I'm going next Monday a few days and for the England game. Up until the weekend, this is how I understood it worked...

=======
It's illegal to trade and import / export Rubles outside of Russia. You can't get rubles from anywhere in the UK.

I was therefore gonna take 100 Euros / Dollars in cash and then draw my money out of the wall... not ideal as I don't understand cyrillic and many machines don't translate to English but hey...
=======

But then I read the englandfans guide which says you can get rubles from the post office now!!

I need to order them today if I'm going to have them by the end of the week - but many websites still say it is illegal to import currency into russia.

Ideally I'd like to have all of our currency up front, so then there's nothing to worry about (other than being mugged!), but don't want it all to be confiscated when entering the country!

Advice from those with experience would be most appreciated...

Most places out there accept dollars anyways as the rouble is a weak currency. Your hotel out there will have a currency exchange place and will do it for a decent price.

All I can say is be careful at night, stay in the main tourist areas, don't go off the beaten track it's a very rough city in some parts.

Enjoy the trip, I loved Moscow when I went out there.

Cheers mate - I think I'm gonna get a mix of Dollars and Rubles. That way I'm covered both ways.

I'm staying in a hostel, so I can't see it having a currency exchange!!

Moscow? Lots of atms there and every single one I used translated to English

Just take a stack of sterling and change it at the airport and top up with cash from the atm if you need to.
