Default RBS consortium wins ABN Amro in Europe's biggest banking takeover

Quite news this one.

As per the wiki ABN Amro owns 2.7 of AS Roma.

Yeah it is a realy big story in the finance sector. could have a lot of knock on effects within the stock market.

Barclays would have won it easily if the stock market hadnt been so volatile over the last few months.

be interesting to see what happens as RBS are one of the biggest banks in the worlkld now with this aquisition

I've got shares in Barclays and they have reacted quite well to the news that they weren't going to win the bid.

Barclays wouldnt have won it "easily" imo as they weren't offering such a large cash offer. ABN and its shareholders would never really want to take on a share exchange against a majority 90%+ cash offer.

Still saying that, I'd say that the RBS have slightly overpaid for the deal.

Yeah they have overpaid by quite a bit. As they are not getting the American bank that they really wanted it seems an odd deal.

RBS have a very good record of taking failing banks and making them a success so wouldnt be shocked to see them do it here as well

All massive take over bids end up with someone overpaying though.

Merrill did pretty well out of the whole deal but then again they bloody needed too after last week.
