Couple of points, firstly, we don't live on a street, and therefore our house has no number. Its official registered address is a name, no number involved.
Secondly, you can't enter a "made up" number when trying to pay for something, because the security check won't be able to find the address and will therefore decline your card.
Finally, most houses that are not part of a settlement (read: city, town, village) are named, and have no numbers associated with the address at all.

| No they don't - there's some houses with an official registered address without a number. In particular houses people have built themselves (or had builders build for them) because they've owned the house at the time of the building they've registered a named as opposed to numbered address with the Council & Post Office, and then as long as there are no objections by either party (usually down to a clashing name within the local area) the house is done without ever having an allocated number.

it still has an address surely? | id imagine theres a field in the payment system which says "House number" and is mandatory so cant be left blank. Im sure you could just put 0 or 1 in there and with the correct house name, road name & post code it should still work. </BLOCKQUOTE>
Probably not, because it won't tally with the details held by the bank/cc co. for that account.

I have a named house and i'm not a posh bastard.
Mainly because i live out in the sticks, hence no street, hence no house number.

| Yes exactly, most houses that aren't on a street won't have a number associated with them.

| you used to work for a local council an dyour telling me that you believe that the post office assigns lot numbers.

I know a few people who live in named houses, and they all have numbers too, just not displayed or used that often.

People who call their house 'Dunroamin' should honestly be stabbed to death with a larger pitchfork.
