France always seem to have a few cavemen lookalikes.
Never really followed rugby myself, as I went to a football-playing school. I did watch Montferrand quite a few times when I lived in France though, as they were the local team.
We managed to get them to change the structure in regards to Hockey in the spring term.
In the first year, my lower sixth, 40 people turned up on the first day.
Next year 120 showed up, more than hockey!
Was lucky enough to be good at both football and rugby and so played in the respective 1st XI and XV.
These days I struggle through an hour of 5 a side.
Why do France play rugby? Most of the teams obviously play because it was invented here and exported with the Empire. France weren't, so why did they take it up and why didn't, as an example, Germany?
I don't think France was ever part of the Empire....
As with most sports take up was due to popularity and, in the case of France, Rugby probably appealed to the more robust southern population (Rugby is still unpopular in Northern France).
