Will post my staple reply on this and say I can be of no help, but having seen a teacher in action over time I have the greatest respect for anyone that does it.

Thinking about it I wonder wtah happened to Westerveld? He was going to be a teacher iirc but was going through a rough patch. Haven't seen him post for ages.

Head-teacher in 15 yrs max if you were career minded. The system likes to fast track males in the primary sector!

I hate the ****ers, and I'm a teacher. What kind of kids do you hate and why? The answer to that is the key to what age-range you should teach .

load of crap tbh, absolute crap. yey for random figures pulled out of your rectum!

just because you have some teaching experience you think you know everything there is to know - its laughable tbh

I don't think he's saying that. My impression is that he's saying if you have the experience of handling a classroom, you can make a decent fist of teaching most subjects.

And from my experience of the ex (who's a teacher), I'd be inclined to agree really. Maybe not 99% to 1% etc, but certainly that experience plays a very large part in your abilities.

My Auntie did a course recently at University, got back this summer and got a job at a primary school almost immediately.

I remember her telling me that the easiest route would be to get a degree (doesn't particulary matter what in) and get some decent work experience at a primary or junior school.

Then go to interviews and as soon as you're into the system then the career prospects are good

I'm sorry but saying it's 1% knowledge of your subject is nonsense unless you are teaching entry-level subjects way below your level of knowledge (such as key-skills). Being knowledgeable in your field is absolutely essential imo. I see evidence of this on a daily basis where I am a better teacher than my colleagues at certain things precisely because I know about the subjects then they do. I also feel less equipped to deal with certain things because I am merely teaching from texts and other resources rather than from my own knowledge/experience.

Furthermore, although actual experiences has taught me way more than the PGCE it has equipped me with methods and knowledge that experience would not have. It's still boring as hell though.

I teach computing and multimedia to both teenagers and adults in an FE college, btw.

Technical/vocational subjects are a bit different tbh. Remember my wonderful IT tutor who had to ask me how to insert a table into Word ffs
