We're using Harvard referencing in our History of Maths essays because the teacher said it would come in useful throughout the course.

Having read the thread about some Uni courses being too easy it got me thinking about the problems I have been having with trying to get into teaching.

Basically, at the moment, someone can do a degree in landscape gardening then do a 1 year PGCE and become a teacher.

Now, I have been working with young people on and off since the age of 18, I am now 27. I have an HND but I have been told it will take me 4 years to become a teacher. This makes no sense at all. I am very good at working with young people and have been a youth worker for the past three years. Surely we should be encouraging people like myself into the profession.

I would welcome any thoughts or opinions on this subject. Also, any advice from someone in a similar position would be appreciated.
wow imagine living in a country where the people responsible for teaching our children have to be qualified to a certain level, its a scandal

to expand its clearly a balance of both but you need to have at least a minimum qualification just so you dont end up with morons and idiots teaching.

A teaching degree or a honours degree plus PGCE at least demonstrates an a certain standard of intellect and application.

I wouldnt be happy at all if i found out that any of my children where being eductaed by someone who was properly educated themselves.

You clearly haven't got a clue so I'm not going to bother. Teaching is 99% experience/ability to "teach" and 1% subject knowledge. The amount of times I've been able to bullshit my way through teaching a subject I know sod all about, simply because I know how to teach is ridiculous. I'm by no means claiming to be some kind of superteacher (couldn't be further from the truth!) but the subject knowledge doesn't really matter, it's all in the materiel either existing at the college already or in textbooks written for that level.

And teacher training (the qualifaction/theory side of things) does absolutely nothing to help you teach.

As for morons and idiots, the level of intelligence/qualifaction required for that is at such a small level to make it a moot point. i.e. GCSEs in English/maths. The inteviewing seperates the wheat from the chaff anyway.

I would be looking to do Primary teaching, having worked in schools through my job there is a severe shortage of male primary teachers.

Hmm, being male may work in your favour, but I think that's the area they're probably going to be most stringent on...maybe try getting in touch with someone from the TDA and ask them for your best option?

On the flip side, you are male, and you do have plenty of experience, which can only be a good thing.
