erm the accident occurs when you let your kids who clearly can't swim go off and play in a 2m deep pond and they drown, someone walking past and not being able to save them is not the "accident".

so what if they were part of the police? they were not trained for such incidents. if you want to question the morality of not getting in and help, fine - but that question would arise regardless of their job. but instead, you simply wanted to use it as having a go at the police. i am shocked. </BLOCKQUOTE>

I'm not having a pop at them. I'm having a pop at their chief who's saying for them (or anyone else), to have helped would have been 'inappropriate'.

6ft = roughly 180cm. And yes, the PCO's should have jumped in to at least try and save the kid.

You have to love modern society where no one is to blame for anything, especially government institutions and services. In that way America is great, because they blame everything on God. But now they're suing God too.

it does, phil dowd says they weren't trained to do water rescue stuff. so regardless of whether the people who are working as PCSOs can swim, as PCSOs they can't because they haven't been trained.

i'm not endorsing this, i think it's barbaric, but it's the thought process that has been followed. do you need anything explained to you while i'm here, old timer?
Yes. Still baffled as to why nobody is supposed to help anyone who's drowning. </BLOCKQUOTE>

ok, i'm stumped there to be honest. sorry bert. maybe you could write them a nice email asking them why and then post their response?

1 inch is 2.54cm and 6 feet is 2 yards which is equal to 1.8288m so you're closer to the truth than the article.

The alarm was raised and the PCSOs arrived on the scene. Police said they could see no sign of Jordon in the water, so they radioed trained officers for help.
so why didn't the fishermen go back in? because they couldn't see him? same goes for the PCSOs, probably just didn't know where to start, and if they weren't great swimmers I can't see them going for a swim around to try and find him.

Plus the article says 2m = 6ft, I've been trying to work this out for a few days, but 1" = 2.4cm? surely, so 1' = 28.8cm? so 6' = 173.2cm? that doesn't seem right to me, where am I going wrong? </BLOCKQUOTE>

Er, the fishermen did go back in. And recovered the boy. Whereupon the police shouted 'stand back, I'm trained for this!' and resuscitated him. He then carked it a few hours later. </BLOCKQUOTE>

I didn't read that if it was in there, if true, then if the fishermen had a better chance of getting him then it makes more sense for them to go in. The whole "they shouldn't go in if they aren't trained" is just pathetic though, as long as they can swim then they should be able to drag him out without training, it's not that difficult.

As you may have suspected, writing nice emails is not a speciality of mine.

ah ok that makes more sense, forgot a digit, now I understand why I can stand up in a 1.8m pool.

The fishermen didn't get him out until he'd already drowned. This may well have been avoided if the coppers had helped them out.

in the eyes of the police organisation, anyone wearing a PCSO uniform who hasn't had the appropriate water / lifesaving training CANNOT swim, even if they actually can if they're not on duty.
