Saw it over the weekend and was simply bemused by the entire movie. Rob Zombie has taken Michael Myers, the evil, soul less killing machine and given him a face, personality and a partial excuse for his actions (blah blah blah messed up family life etc etc)
The plot itself is obviously pretty close to that of the original, but this time around they've spent 30/40 mins introducing us to Myers as a child. He then goes on his typical rampage round Haddonfield in persuit of the hapless Laurie Strode, strangely portrayed as almost the total opposite of the original character played by Jamie Lee-Curtis.
Safe to say what follows is a lot of blood, gore and death, in the middle of which Myers seems to leave one of his victims alive, all be it for no apparent reason, this is a far cry from the Michael Myers of old who would kill you, and then some!
I wont ruin the ending but we then have the customary game of cat and mouse with Myers and Strode, where again Myers breaks character and seems to show emotion, again!
To be fair the film does have its good points
- The guy who plays Myers carries himself well and gives a good account of himself
- Malcom Mcdowell has a great shot at filling the boots of Donald Pleasance with a fine portrayal of Dr Loomis
- The film itself is shot well, Zombie managed to keep some of the suspense and eariness of the original and being Rob Zombie, the gore and effects hold up well
All in all not a great experience, I saw it out of curiosity as im sure many will, but my advice...wait for the dvd
So essentially, its just like every other Rob Zombie movie? There's a mad killer, who you should feel a little sorry for because of the personal circumstances, an ending with good guys vs bad guys where the story tries to make you feel sorry for the bad guys again, and lots of gore to gloss over the fact that there's very little in the way of a storyline that hasn't already been done to death in a thousand other movies.
