Been with my current employer for 10 years now. It's not the career I want, however, it pays more than any career I would want...

From about 14/15 I had my heart set on being architect, even going on work experience for a week during school. Then from the age of 17 I wanted to go into sports journalism and got part-time work with the local paper, doing match reports, interviewing local sports stars etc.Now in Uni doing a BA in English and history after starting my second year, and hope to do a Masters in Journalism after my third year.

Year after I finished my degree. Always loved history, loved my undergraduate course, and wanted to go on and do some postgraduate work but thought at the time i'd be doing it for the wrong reasons. Working during that year though I began to think about it even more seriously, particularly since I hated working for a bunch of idiots and have always loved being in charge of my own time.
Since then have got my MA, done a year into my PhD and already done a lot of teaching here at Sheffield. Next semester i've been offered a chance to help to run a new course the dept. is offering in my own specific research area so couldn't be happier. No qualms at all about deciding to work towards a career in academia |

I loved History but decided that there wasn;t really going to be much at the end of it if I had carried it on to Uni.

| A lot of people do but i'm fortunate enough in terms of backing from my family to really chose something I wanted to spend the rest of my life doing rather than bringing home a wage every week. Although i'd still contend history is a good "general" degree to have even if some (idiotic) employers are a little blinkered as to its use.
