i used Jet to Mumbai in march this year. and agree about the entertainment thing, food is good too

When I used to fly to the Middle East, I used travel agents in the East end of London (Forest Gate, Stratford, etc) as they usually found me cheaper flights than anywhere else. It was worth flying Egypt Air or Cyprus Airways through them and get the price £250 less than what it would to fly BA, etc.

Bangalore probably the cleanest place I visited in all of India.
Fly to Mumbai, then you can get cheap onward flights to Bangalore/Goa/Kerala
Fly to Delhi, you can visit Agra/Taj Mahal in a couple of days, and you're pretty close to
Rajasthan (Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Pushkar, Jaipur all good for a visit).
I didn't go to east India so can't really comment on what's around Kolkata and Chennai.
