Hi all
I'd like you to tell me, if anyone knows, where Lewes did they get their nickname Rooks and what it means..I searched the dictionary and I saw that Rooks are something like crows but I also read that Rook is the tower in chess that is very similar with the Lewes logo..
I'd like to search and find out from where the teams get their nicknames and also what they symbolize so please if you know just let me know..
Thank you in advance
The Dripping Pan, however, is so named because the land, which has been used for recreation in the area for years, was originally the site of salt mines belonging to the local Priory.
Also, this is the shield of Lewes, containing whats looks very much like a Rook (it's actually a Black Eagle). So the bird plus the Castle -- which seems to be a popular choice for emblems in Lewes, as evidenced by this -- would naturally lead to the nickname.

And rumoured to be the original site for the Castle's motte and bailey, lending credence to the castle thing.
