I can't let a thread about Lewes to go without mentioning Simon de Montfort's victory in battle there in 1261.

I think Scott is probably right with regards the origin of the nickname.

Fisrt of all I have to thank you all for your responses!!
In one last thing I would like your help..Could anyone of you add a sound clip or soemthing like that so I will be able to hear from an English-man how you pronounce the name of that team-place "Lewes"?
Is it called something like "luis"?

My wife lost her virginity in said house (Ann was out iirc)
I got married there
So did my friend Darren
It has a big prison that one of the Krays was in for ages, the non gay one iirc
