i would presume your on a 'probationary period' so they can get rid of you with how ever many days notice was set in your contract. if you had a contract that is.
ive just passed my probationary period. so they now have to give me 1 months notice. before i think it was 1 week.

you could argue that it was scheduled holiday. they HAVE to honour any holidays already scheduled.

If he was on probabtion they that pattern of illness/absence, especially telling them a day before that he was having laser eye surgery and would be off, was a no brainer!
Also you cannot have flu for two days! If you have flu, you are in bed for a week.
I have done a little work for Littlewoods in the past and they employed people on temporary contract and then let go those with poor attendance.
