I have several methods that differ according to the photo , but one technique I always use is as follows:
1. Duplicate the subject layer
2. below that layer create a new one filled with a bright color
3. with the duplicate subject layer active I go to the channels pallette
4. Now I usually duplicate the green or blue channel depending on the photo.
5. Now I run curves and levels.
6. I then use the dodge and burn tool to clean it up( dodge all the parts that I want white and multiply the areas I want black.
7. Now I ctrl click the copied channel and go back to the layers and use the duplacted channel as a mask on the duplicated subject layer.
8. I then tweak to taste with the gaussian blur , levels and curves

I hope you haven't forgotten that example. If you were close I'd offer to come over and help clean off your desk. |

Welcome, lgyoda.
Masking is used to create precise selections, either to isolate an element from an image, paste it in another one, or to apply local changes.
