Default sky broadband - reliable?

I imagine this sort of thing has probably come up before, I have done a wee search, but most of the topics are pretty well dated, so I'm starting this lovely fresh thread

we had sky broadband activated today - the basic £35 sky sports & internet la dee da package. they sent the wireless router a few days before activating, so we set that up and I tried playing a bit of networked FM with my housemate over it, but we just kept dropping out of each others games. couldn't really be bothered looking into it so we gave up.

now the internet is on, when it's working it's fine - speed, connection - fine. but for whatever reason it seems to be constantly dropping the connection briefly. the little wireless icon in the toolbar doesn't suggest anything is aloof, but you know it happens because I get signed out of MSN, can't browse for 30 seconds or so, then the 'connected!' blurb shoots up from the toolbar. sometimes, even though the wireless icon says the signal strength is 'Excellent', it says the Speed goes down from 54Mbps to 1Mbps. I don't really know what this means, but I do know that when it does this, I'm ****ed and can't browse. I have to right click -> repair

Are these kind of problems just teething problems? seeing as it's only been going for 10 hours or so. or is Sky broadband rubbish and I'm a fool for not seeking the sage advice of OTF before signing up? because we were going to phone up tomorrow and pay for a faster connection, but not if it's going to be this shoddy all year.

interested to hear any experiences you folks have had, I shall check this thread after my night time slumber before committing anymore of my hard-borrowed cash to sky

My uncle had a lot of trouble with Sky Broadband, had to phone them lots of times, also had to get a replacement router amongst other things. He has now changed ISP's.

I don't know about other peoples experiences, but I wouldn't use them.

afaik its usually the case when you first setup the broadband that it drops out constantly for the first few days. It's trying to find the optimum speed.

Someone technical can explain it far better than that though.

Had sky broadband for 2 months now, the 16mb package. Very happy with it so far, can't remember losing the connection at all and download speeds have been consistent.

Had it for a few weeks now and apart from the first few days where it went so slow at times i literally couldnt browse it's been great. I'm hooked upto the router through a wire though so maybe it's the wireless bit that is dodgy

I've had a few problems with the SNR dropping at peak times to such a level that my connection stops working. Seem to have solved it by re-booting the router anytime it went below 6.5. Last night it never dropped below 12. Not used wireless yet but the wired connection has been excellent. Basically getting 10-12Mb for £10 a month.

Should be getting mine sometime next week - should have it already but BT are the most incompetent company ever and didn't install my line when they said they would.

Anyone know how long it takes Sky Broadband to be activated after making the initial call to order it?

its ****, had nothing but trouble with it. the line check is not done properly so if your attenuation is garbage then Sky will not tell you, if you are paying £10/mo for 16mb despite your line attenuation stating you can only receive at max 2.5mb/s, they will still charge you for the 16mb service despite them offering the 2mb service for free.

wankers

All you have to do is ask them what your line is capable of when you sign up. Common sense no?
