probably something involving politics/administration/PR/journalism - so basically, how much would an M.A help me in view of these very general careers?
No one seems to have answered this bit, so I'll make some wild guesses in the hope someone will correct me.
Journalism: I doubt an MA is particularly useful - a bit of Googling suggests that most people entering journalism are graduates rather than post-grads.
PR: Again, most entrants seem to be graduates. There is some demand for post-grads, but specifically for people with post-grad qualifications in PR, so an MA in history won't help much.
Politics/administration: It looks like the Civil Service doesn't require a Masters, but it might improve your chances and/or starting salary.
I'd imagine if you are applying for something in journalism or PR, a distinction at MA Level is better than a 2.1 BA, cetaris parabus, though I doubt it would get you a job at a national, rather than a local newspaper.
If you are interested in journalism, without doubt either start writing for the student paper (Bristol's is pretty decent) or/and get some work experience at a local or regional paper where you live at home in the hols.
I did work exp at the MEN last summer and at the mo I'm deputy ed of Manchester's student paper, though ironically I'm unsure as to what to do after my MA. Probably won't be journalism.

well my degree is in computer science, but i think i could teach most science-based subjects well. i really have no idea how it works, if a degree in the relevant subject is important then that limits me slightly. i'm hoping to find out more on this teaching experience thing i'm doing. at the moment i'm just going to try to stay in education for a while (why i posted in this thread) because i) i'm reasonably good at it, may as well go as far as i can, ii) i really enjoy learning about the field, iii) i don't have enough confidence in my own decision making abilities.
