And (once again) it won't damage any reputations as much as you keep saying it will. </BLOCKQUOTE>
I disagree but I really don't see the point in the argument from hereon in as it just comes down to two different, but I would suggest both perfectly valid, predictions. Only time will tell. It will be interesting to look back on this thread in a year's time to see what the consequences, if there are any, are over the long term.

Petition the Prime Minister to Hold a general election in 2007 Post #112
I think Brown was genuinely undecided as to what to do regarding the possible election, and needed the time to see how the land lay first. I would much rather have a leader who made his own mind up and stuck by a decision rather than get swept along by the media tidal wave clamouring for an election. All of this talk of him bottling it is crap that has been thrown out by the Tories and the media.
If you got the chance to do a job you always wanted, and were guaranteed at least 18 months then why would you jeapordise it all by calling an election and potentially losing that job because voters have tarred you with the anti Blair brush ?? Surely its more sensible to take your 18 months as an opportunity to put your ideas into place and show the country what you can do.

If it's so obvious that he shoudln't have called one, why did he take so long to decide?

I never said it was obvious, but I refer you to the point highlighted - he didn't want to (nor need to) make a snap decision so rightly took his time over it. Didn't realise he had to beat the Countdown clock over this matter ??

I paraphrased the above as 'obvious', sorry.
Further, when not deciding potentially jeopardises your party's future chances in any election and when that could lead to MPs in marginals losing seats, you do have a certain 'duty' to your party to make the dcision before it gets to that stage. He failed to do this.

when speculation was still going on over whether an election would be called or not, a common theme was that people would be unenthusiastic for it, due to the time of year and the shortage of time since the last general election.
don't really see what's changed

That's what I asked you.
What political points has he made that have so infuriated you and led you to believe this?
It's the lack of political points that make me believe he'd be a useless PM. </BLOCKQUOTE>
Of course, you become the leader of the Opposition in the UK, have almost half the country in your wards and managed all of this without a single political opinion or publicised statement of political intent.
