Much as I have time for them, Joy Division always struck me as a band whose rather rabid canonisation exceeded the quality of their studio output. The coverage is more than jaded now. Not their fault I guess, their story seems very easy for people to latch onto, the self-contained nature, the visual resonance, the (melo)dramatic end... teenagers are particularly susceptible to that sort of thing, it feeds their self-image.
Numerous bands from roughly that timeframe, for me, which I'd stick on any time before Joy Division - PiL, Wire, The Cure, Talking Heads, Magazine, The Fall, XTC, Teardrop Explodes, Suicide, Devo, Gang of Four, The Associates, Cocteau Twins, Pere Ubu, The Adverts, The Residents. Can't imagine many biopics of these guys any time soon, maybe for the best.
