Indeed. Was awesome in the arcades once you mastered his fatality and people would gasp in amazement when you pulled it off.

I remember watching some kid in the arcade at Butlins for over an hour playing Mortal Kombat, he had a magazine with him that had all the moves and finishers, everytime he died he'd just stick more money in and pick a different character so he could do their finishing move

Some of the official machines had a few moves displayed on them so you weren’t just button bashing. Think some of the Street Fighter 2 ones had them on as well.

I remember when you lost in Fatal Fury the continue screen would show you how to do a special move which usually persuaded you to pump more money in so you could try the move highlighted.

Street Fighter 2 used to get me continuing, mainly because of the taunt by your opponent when they beat you. Saying I fought like a girl had me desperate for a rematch.

I appear to have made the mistake of liking relatively rare games, eg. Skies of Arcadia just cost me £15 on eBay, and that was a relative bargain.
