Must blow working food prep in the UK. Tight bastards.
I generally find 15% of the bill and then round up to the nearest 25ยข increment. I only withold tips if the server is openly hostile, which has only happened once.
haircut or cabbie I'll just round it up as it's not ridiculous. if it's food then someone else is paying anyway.
worse scenario I've had was when me and my pals just landed in Barcelona and went for lunch on Las Ramblas. service and food was awful, so we left no tip. mentalist waiter comes out demanding a tip because "that's how he earns his living" etc. we try explaining amicably how rubbish the food and service was but he's having none of it. eventually just have to walk away, but my plank of a mate leaves the hostel booking info at the table... cue an embarrassing request for it back 15 minute later.
and yeah, having never tipped at bars here in the UK it's a little weird going to spain or the US or wherever and having a tip saucer thrust upon you. never really know what the expected amount is, so I end up leaving whatever the change is from the round.
I have no problem tipping for good service but I have a small problem with tipping people who think they automatically deserve it and are barely competent at their job.
Always tip 10% in restaurants. More if the service was exceptional.
Annoys me immensely though if out in a big group I will always chuck a quid or two extra in for the tip and then some people will only pay their share exactly. Leaves the table with a tiny tip on a huge bill when we've been a pain in the arse to serve. I can see why most restaurants stick a mandatory service charge on large groups. Was a little annoyed the other week though when we came across a restaurant which stuck a mandatory service charge of 15% on.
