my location now in cloudy/rainy Oregon, though, doesn't allow for any where near as much of that as I used to be able to do while in Calif. and had much better weather conditions). It's been a lifelong interest.
It's a common misconception that ALL of CA is nice and sunny. Only southern CA; northern CA is just as foggy/cloudy/rainy as Oregon is.
Here in Humboldt County, 70+ degree weather is an extreame rareity.
But, I accually quite like it here.
Also, have you seen the new pics from Saturn sent back from Cassini, very intreaguing and unusual.
[bustagut] Humbolt! That's pretty amazing! Well, small world as they say -- I'm very well acquainted with Eureka and Arcata (my husband went to Humbolt State before he joined the Coast Guard and we are both Californians = I was born in San Fran, he in Napa, I grew up in Novato/Marin County north of SF. After high school my parents moved to Smith River which is north of Crescent City, Calif, very close to the Oregon boarder. I'm WELL acquainted with the coastal weather in Calif. and Oregon. B7 I like it, but sometimes I wish for more sunny days during other seasons. Summer here in the Coos Bay/North Bend area is really beautiful -- never too hot -- nor too cold in winter. You do know that the Star Wars episode, Return of the Jedi, was partly filmed in the Jed. Smith Forest in the Crescent City area...
That's also where my son was born (his name is also Sean -- how odd is that? [confused] ) he'll be 25 in December.
B7 Very cool composite imagery! Looks like a portion of the Eagle nebula area. [righton] I will have to check out the newest images from Cassini -- I've been really intrigued by Titan.
What a coincidence! [confused] I'm not 25 yet, but my B-Day is in December too.... \:]
Now I'm starting to get creeped out. [confused] [saywhat]
Anyway, I do know that part of Return of the Jedi was filmed in Cresent City. I really love the redwoods and the climate. Also there was a movie filmed in Ferndale too....gosh, I forget the name of it but it stared Jim Carry. \:]
[confused] 8[ \:] Yikes! That's pretty odd!! December must be a popular month -- I have several friends and family with December birthdays (Sean's is the 22nd, my husband's father has his on Dec. 18, a longtime friend has hers Dec. 26, a couple of my husband's friends are born Dec. 6 and 8th, and the man I worked with when in Washington state doing wildlife rehabilitation also had a Dec. 18 b-day).
My son is very artisitic too, but he's taken it in another direction and has become a jewelry designer/goldsmith/silversmith and he also (and this boggles my mind still) taught himself antique watch and clock repair, actually he was always taking things apart to find out how they worked when he was very young, and after a while got to where he could repair things and invent devices too -- all those tiny parts in mechanical movements ... gees, that would be like brain surgery to me!
Yeah, the NW is being used for filming more often (in ROTJ many of the local loggers were hired on as extras for storm troopers, and various members of the film crew (many of the ewok actors) stayed at some of the hotels in the area and were kinda into the rowdy party mode. Jim Carry has done some really funny films (I think my favorites are still the 2 Ace Ventura ones, and Dumb and Dumber, and The Mask)...but what was filmed in Ferndale? \:] Was it the recent one, "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind?" \:] What I remember about Ferndale, besides the wonderful redwood forest/ferns is the elk herd living amidst it -- wow! B7 Hope they are still there.
Ah, I remember! It was "The Majestic". Ferndale is filled with lots of old victorian houses. The movie was set late during that era.
I really like Ace Ventura, Dumb & Dumber, and The Mask too.
[bustagut]
Oh, and my b-day is Dec 10th.
When I was younger I loved taking apart clocks and electronic stuff. Then I started making stuff like blinking lights, alarms, and sensors that beeped when someone went through my door. 3[ 8}
[bustagut] That's too funny! Many of the December b-day people I've mentioned also have had some interest in tech stuff -- besides my son, my husband is an aviation engineering warrant officer who's done his share of radar tech and navigation equipment repair when he first started in the Coast Guard, but now he's in charge of seeing to all systems on the helos being repaired and maintained properly and is responsible for releasing the aircraft for flight when he deems them safe. His dad also had engineering degrees which served his career in construction. Yep, Sean built some "detectors" too and found some books on old FBI type "spy" devices also pretty interesting...buzzers and lights going off giving me a jump, but the thing I worried about though was when I brought the vacume cleaner in there -- the parts for all sorts of stuff was scattered around (though he knew where it all was) and invariably tiny parts would get into the carpet and I was always afraid I'd vacume up something valuable. [confused] [bustagut] It was fun what he could come up with though.
"Majestic" -- now that's one I haven't seen. I remember the Victorian homes -- lots all over in the NW, there was many great old restored ones also in the town of Port Townsend, Washington, and they are pretty cool imo.
[bustagut] My mom would get upset when she went to vacuum my room too. [doh] "Sean! whats all this junk on your carpet!! [upset] "
Ooops. [confused]
We had to get new carpet because there was soo many stains on it. Then I had to use a mat. But I won't tell you what happened when I left my soldering iron on...... [confused] .
Now she yells at me for being on the computer all the time. :B
[bustagut] [shhh] ...yep, a good idea is putting other less expensive carpet over the areas most used....but a soldiering iron --- oh gees, yes, sounds like you need a work shop/studio/computer shop! [bustagut]
But to be sure she's proud of your creativity -- even when she hears the metal bits hit the vacume cleaner fan, so to speak. [righton]
Yes, I need a studio!... |
Right now we only have 1 computer in the house, so me, my dad, and my mom have to share it. :{ However, I saving up for a G5. %} %} %} , once I have the money though (in 5 years) , they'll be G6s. | | |
And yes, I'm sure my mom is proud of me, even when I leave things left on, forget chores, don't make my bed, etc....can I go on. [confused]
I just try to avoid the "full name"
[doh] "Sean Patrick Kent!!!!" [doh]
[bustagut]
[bustagut] [bustagut] Ah yes, the "dreaded full name" fx...I admit I've felt the need to resort to it a time or two also when I felt my hair standing on end [upset] , thus the "Sean Edwin Doka!" [bustagut] It's all small potatoes though...and he did fix the vacume cleaner! [righton]
Save your cash when ya can and you'll have your computer sooner than you think! I'd bet you'll have it waaaaaay before. Maybe set up a computer fund. Just an idea. One thing we did with Sean saving for his various interests was to match whatever he saved and put into the savings for it -- this quickly doubled the deposits and the balance grew fast...was pretty encouraging for him, and I think he saved even more as he saw it was really going to work.
