I remember back in the day of forming the Premier League there was all sorts of talk about how it would improve the English National side. That was part of their 'mission statement' so to speak.

You can invite everyone to the party and start running football as a business and then turn around and moan that people that own the business want to make as much money as possible out of it. Obviously, they dont really care if someone is English or not.

Whatever measures are taken would probably take a long for us to see any real effect.

I like the idea of 7 subs and the extra 2 being English. Maybe the extra 2 are optional or something to get things moving slowly and see how it goes after a few seasons.

Whatever anyone comes up with people are going to shout it down and they'll shout it down with no other solutions cause for current Premiership owners there really isnt a problem with English players. It's also very easy (and fun) to just slag something off without offering anything constructive.

Make it their problem, it's unfair to say "oh, by the way, you're only allowed 5 foreigners". Gotta to be something of a slow burner to begin with and see how it takes. The subs thing is not a bad start for me. Dont the Jocks do something similar with their subs ? Age limits, etc ? See how it goes. Doesnt effect most clubs as can still use 5 but there's an advantage to having 7 so maybe clubs will start changing their thinking slowly.

Obviously, big clubs will whinge and nothing will happen. Change the freaking rules in a reasonable way and let things change gradually instead of trying to implement something radical where of course you will meet resistence

8 in a matchday squad?

Still don't get how they are going to stop clubs just getting around the issue by issuing any foreigner who is eligible with a UK passport just like Spanish teams do/did with non-eu players in Spain

Your average Spainish bloke might not fancy having a British passport though. Not all countries allow dual passports to be held do they ?

In the XI, rather than a matchday squad to start with (anything less is unrealistic for now)

As Razzler says, it's not the time for some radical change (like saying a limit of 5 foreigners in the squad), do it gradually and it'll be more widely accepted. There was plenty of whinging over the new UEFA rules, but since they are changed season by season instead of all together, the effect is muc more acceptable to most clubs, who have the time to get their team in order.

Why not? I don't get why its any different to someone from South America having to get a Spanish passport to play in Spain. Ronaldinho got one so basically Dos Santos could come into the team (though Dos Santos has one now I think). Messi got one as soon as he could so he could play at Barcelona otherwise he would have had to wait. The same is going to happen in the premiership.

And yes some countries (i.e. China) don't allow this, but that's not that common.

Can those South Americans keep their South American passports as well though ? Not sure if they're effectively 'becoming Spanish' or it's just a matter of getting another passport.

I'm sure anyone would get another one for a multi-million pound deal but i dont know if you're officially allowed to hold 2 passports of different nationality in the UK are you ?

If you can and have to pick they're kinda giving up their nationality. South Americans cant really make money playing footie over there so have to come to Europe in a sense. Already sell outs

Yes, it's only countries like China were you can't be duel nationality.

For example Ronaldinho/Messi now arn't just Spanish are they, they still play for Brazil/Argentina.

I'm pretty certain you can hold duel-nationality in England too. Take for example Owen Hargreaves, he's going to have a Canadian passport too I would have though.
