I was going to raise that one. And it wasnt Mourinho that pioneered it.

tbh though I dont know how many years ago wingers were doing this.. maybe ages.

Do you mean Pirlo at Milan? Well, it was in Italy but Barça had Guardiola playing there in the early 90’s in a diamond midfield. Although Guardiola wasn’t a 10, the “rule” in football is to have the defensive midfielder playing behind the creative midfielder.

How important Barça were to the special one.
The wingers on the opposite side, a centre back playing upfront, the arrogance of Van Gaal...
