dont buy a saxo!!! unless you fancy a big repair bill. suspension is ***** and likely to break costing you loads to get it fixed.

have a look at insurance and work out what car you can afford to insure and also run.

i went as a named driver and continued to do so for about 7 years, made my insurance for my first impreza a right bitch so get your own deal as it works out cheaper when you want a decent car later on

Any car will incur costs when they break.

Saxo's are quite handy as you can interchange certain parts with Pug 106's.

Would agree that the insurance should be your only concern.

As an underwriter I'm always getting cases referred to me with young lads buying stupid cars.

Forget Saxo's we load their premiums because so many are modded & we only find out when they are stacked, your best option is to spend as little as possible on the car so you can go for Third party only cover, your going to scrape as long as no-one else is involved we (insurance companies) don't need to no about it.

Stick with something like a Fiesta or Corsa (1000cc or less), you could also beg your parents to take out a policy with you as a named driver remembering to tell the insurers that you will be the main user (if you don't the policy is invalid & you won't get paid out), there are companies that will give you a no claims bonus if you insure with them in your own name when you are a little older.

My personal recommendation is to insure in your own name from day one to start building up your own no claims straight away, by the time you hit 21/22 you'll have a maximum discount at just about the time you'll be able to afford a decent car.

Excellent advice from Barside above.

Just to add, I'd you stick to a Ford or Vauxhall mainly as you'll be buying cheap and no doubt will need to repair your car at some point. Ford/Vauxhall have cheaper main dealer parts than most other manufacturers in this country.

Oh, and make sure whatever you buy, have someone who really knows what they're doing that you can trust to give the car a once over. Seriously make this happen, because you'll be getting ****ed over with the insurance, so don't pay out twice in buying a car that is going to be in and out of the garage!

I think Direct-Line offer no claims to named drivers if I remember rightly.

I would ignore this, iirc these things are only ever good as long as you stay with the company. No claims isn't recognised by others.

imo you should be getting insurance in your own name from the start.

It will be in my own name as i want no claims when im 21 so i can get a better car without insurance being sky high. What about mods on the car? If i put on alloys and a sports exhaust etc would insurance go up alot? Is there a guide for how much insurance goes up for each modification done to the car?
