m_m, I think you're somewhat mis-representing the original question

in the context of English players alone you may have a point about them commanding higher fees etc

but the guy specifically pointed out in the first post that you can adapt the concept to any home nation ...

i.e. do you want your team to win the league? or would you rather fill it with whiter than white (literally?) home players and them not win the league?

Well, I'm not going to get into an argument about this, because I don't actually care enough. But for instance, people may want their national team to do well as well as their club, and like to see their club players representing England.
