Default Ireland at it again

Stephen Ireland has pulled out of the Ireland squad, saying he "wouldn't do himself or his country justice"

Ireland pulled out of the Republic's last qualifier against the Czech Republic in September citing the death of a grandmother but later admitted he had made it up as he wanted to be with his partner who had suffered a miscarriage.
what was wrong with telling the truth to begin with

probably a bit upset about the miscarriage and didn't want the whole world knowing?

shirley he could have told him manager in confidence and Ireland could have released a press statement saying hes withdrawn for "personal reasons" or something? Just seem silly to lie about what seems to me to be a perfectly valid reason not to play in an international.

maybe he considered it too personal even to tell the manager, and thought an excuse would be the best option?

tbf, feel quite sorry for him and if he doesn't feel he's in the right frame of mind to perform for his country, then fair play for him admitting so.

I thought it was a little unfair that people seemed to be on his back after his withdrawl. I am sure if he said his missus had a miscarriage they'd have released him anyway. So leaving the squad not a big thing.

Instead he wanted to keep it private so come up with something else. Problem seems to be that the FA and City for some reason contacted each of his grandmothers and then informed him they are in fact alive and he had to tell the truth

The whole 'right frame of mind' thing a bit week though. Has he informed Sven he doesnt want to play for City as well then due to this fragile mental state ?
