Just as a boring spin-off, what languages do people actually know? I have a couple of mates who now about six langauges each and I'm always stunned. Not sure why really, I guess because I have such difficulty in grasping foreign languages.

Swedish is the only language I'm fluent in.

I wouldn't call myself fluent in English considering how handicapped I feel while speaking it compared to Swedish, but for everyday use it's good enough.

Some French. I can understand it quite well, but I have a hard time speaking it, other than to order in restaurants and simple things like that.

A little bit of Spanish. Theoretically I'm supposed to know quite a lot of both Spanish and French, but in reality it's somewhat different

As a Swedish speaker I of course understand Norwegian and Danish well, but I can't speak either language. Though then again, that's not needed as speakers of those languages understand Swedish too.

I also have, oddly enough, quite a good understanding of Dutch, despite never studying either it or German. Medical school might be a good way to learn some Latin too Just that it's a somewhat narrow scope, to put it mildly.

I've been studying French for so long I should be fluent in it, but lack of confidence inhibits fluent speaking, though I can understand it all well enough.

Basic spanish, and russian too, both of which I'd like to improve upon if I get the chance.

The most effective way, other than going to the country, would be to get private lessons. That way you can arragne them around your life, although it would be expensive.

I bought Michel Thomas' CDs for learning French, it's finding the time though to actually sit down and go through them.

His method of learning though is not forcing yourself to remember, no writing etc, just letting you learn the words and let it all come together naturally. Will see how that goes.
